Mold on my zucchini plant (and how I got rid of it!)

So the other day while watering, I was listening to a gardening podcast (just like I do almost every morning while gardening), when I heard something that was very interesting..  These northern homesteaders were talking about a common problem they have with white mold in their zucchini plants.

Well it just so happens that, last year, I had the same problem!  The mold completely took over my zucchini plant, starting with the leaves and working it’s way down to the zucchini..  I don’t think we got a single zucchini off that plant last year!

So the podcast goes on to talk about what the mold is and does, and then finally, how to get rid of it!  They said to just to put baking soda and water in a spray bottle and spray the infected leaves..  Sounds simple enough!  So I put that knowledge in the back of my mind for the time being, secretly hopping that the mold would come back this year in my zucchini plant so that I could test out my new cure!

When I went out to check the garden after a day or two of rain, I noticed the white mold on my zucchini plant and practically jumped for joy!  I ran inside, got the spray bottle I use for gardening, put some baking soda and water into it, and ran back out to the garden shaking it up as I ran.  I sprayed those leaves down so good they were dripping wet (and my hand hurt like heck!) when I was done.

I went back to the garden later that night and sprayed again with the baking soda water mixture, and my zucchini plant looked better already!

This was what it looked like the first day I went out there.  BEFORE I sprayed!  It looks like someone came out here with baby powder and shook it on my plant!

(Day 1)

This was taken the day AFTER I started spraying.  Looks so much better, I couldn’t believe my eyes!  There were still a few spots on my zucchini leaves, but I was confident they wouldn’t stay long..

Third day, and I just went to check on my zucchini plant this morning after our rain storm last night.  Not a smudge of mold on them!

(Day 3)

I’m so proud of my zucchini plant and my new favorite remedy for it.  It’s looking much better now, the lower leaves are dying off while the higher leaves are green and happy.  I can’t believe all it took was baking soda and water in a spray bottle!

Have you ever had white mold like this on your zucchini plant?  What did you do about it?  Hope I helped you if you have been having this problem and didn’t know what to do.

Have an amazing day, smile, and don’t forget to thank your plants for all they do for you!

    • I believe I had added about a tablespoon of baking soda to an almost full spray bottle when I had done this. It wasn’t much baking soda, just a little pour of the box to add a kick to the water, shake it up, and get to spraying.
