Our Summer To-Do List for the Homestead

~

With the start of summer right around the corner, we are trying our best to keep up with the mowing around the property, as well as starting the new projects of the year.

This summer is the first one with our new home, so there is plenty to do!

1. We want to add more raised beds to the front of the yard. This year, we are focusing on planting perennials that will come back every year. NEXT year, we plan on having all of the gardens thriving by growing food and flowers! In order to do that, we have to add all of the flower beds this year and fill them up with leaves and grass to sit over until next summer so that they will be ready for planting!

2. The chickens need a coup. We have the pen set up and the chickens have gone from ‘field trip’ visits to the pen, to spending a few hours out in it. They have a tiny coup that hubby made last week, but it is only a temporary one and it needs to be finished. This is one of the top priorities for this month as the chicks are starting to outgrow their tote and get bigger.

3. Thriving at the Farmers Market! This year I’m getting back in the swing of going to the Farmers Market again! I just finished my first Farmers Market last week and it was honestly so fun to see everyone again! It’s been two years since I’ve done the Farmers Market, and everyone welcomed me back with open arms and warm embraces! I cannot wait to do it full time one day, but I will settle for once a week (weather depending).

4. We want to add a clothesline. Eventually this summer, we plan on adding a clothesline on our property so that we can dry our clothes on the line. I miss getting to dry my clothes this way, and it honestly feels nice to put clothes outside to dry (especially towels)! We have finally gotten everything for the clothesline, but we are still debating on where to put it up at, and when.

For now, that’s all we have planned for our ‘summer projects’. I am sure the list will grow, and we will end up with a To-Do List for Fall as well. But for now, this is what we have planned for the summer in between all of the yard work, working, and keeping up with the house.

We are trying now to put ‘too much‘ on our plate for our first summer in our new house, but we are ambitious and ready to get things rolling!

We have done much this spring, including buying our home, getting chickens, building a compost, adding raised garden beds, and planting berry and flowering bushes around the boarder of our property.

Keep following my weekly posts to keep updated with our story of our tiny homestead and how we are accomplishing our goals. ❤ COMMENT BELOW what your summer goals are for this year! And as always, smile, have an amazing day, and get going on your to-do lists!

  1. If I may suggest, due to this experience, I would put the clothesline in full sun and away from any trees or water sources. I have had to wash my sheets more than once due to birds leaving their droppings on my freshly washed clothes. I also love my towels and linens hung outside to enjoy the sun but birds can be nasty. You may also want to put whirlygigs/pinwheels on the clothesline posts. It may help keep the birds off the clothesline. I also wouldn’t use the cloth type clothesline. My jeans would end up dragging the ground after a bit on the line. Wet jeans are heavy!!!

I think you guys are amazing in all that you do. check out my blog for more farming tips: POSTS – Living the Country Life My Way (hercountryways.blog)

    Have a great week!

    • We plan on putting it in full sun, but unfortunately it’ll need to be by trees, no way around that. 😛 I love the idea of putting whirlygigs/pinwheels around it! I did that for my gardens and it kept most things out as well. As for the clothesline material, we went and got proper clothesline made of heavy-duty vinyl coated wire. We didn’t want the cloth type either, as it stretches out AND stuff starts growing on it after a while..
