Weekly Update: Everyone Is Sick and We’re Moving

~

Okay, so there has been a few big reasons I haven’t been writing much in the last few weeks. So let me give you guys an update as to what’s been happening with the home we bought..

First off, the home we bought was COVERED in nicotine! The people before us were heavy smokers and the walls were a brownish color with drips going down the walls when we bought it! Before we could move in, we needed to wash all of the walls and paint over them with smell resistant primer and paint! Great idea in theory… Except that after days of scrubbing nicotine off the walls, we found out that it can soak into our skin, which made everyone sick.

Because of the nicotine (and a couple of viruses going around) everyone was now sick. I had a sore throat so bad that I ended up calling in sick from work almost every day last week. My throat closed up, I lost my voice for about three days, and I even got tested for strep throat because I was sure that’s what I had! (It was not.) My father went home with a sore throat and bad coughing after the third day, and with his gout, he elbow also swelled up to the size of a tennis ball! I am finally feeling better as of today, but now my fiancé has a bad cold. And my mother managed to hurt her arm.. WE ARE ALL FALLING APART!

We are halfway through our thirty day notice here at the apartment, and that means that we are on track to move this week! This week we have set aside some time to move, which wasn’t easy with everyone’s schedules, and the fact that everyone is sick or injured isn’t helping. We still have a bit to paint and clean over at the new house, but the plan is to do a bit of cleaning in between moving, and hopefully we will get it all finished and stuff moved in by the end of the week!

I am starting to get anxiety as things progress with the move. My anxiety levels have been really good lately. However, as the moving date draws near, it’s all just becoming a little too real right now! I spent all day yesterday packing the apartment up, and it now officially feels like we’re moving!

The apartment is almost packed up! Yesterday, in between naps and rests for the headaches I’ve been having, I managed to pack up quite a bit of the bedroom, almost all of the office, some of the kitchen, and everything in the living room except for the X-BOX of course (my fiancé won’t let me pack that until we move over there). The apartment is starting to echo, which isn’t helping my headaches, and there are boxes EVERYWHERE!

So yeah, that’s my weekly update! Sorry again for not posting as much as I had been, but I know that you all can understand that moving is stressful and I don’t have much time to be on the computer as of late. Another two weeks and things should (hopefully) go back to normal as we settle into our new house and say goodbye to this apartment forever (thank goodness)!

As always my lovely readers, smile, have an amazing day, and stay safe and healthy out there! ❤

  1. I was afraid this was going to happen when you told us about the walls. I wish you could afford to pay someone to go in and finish the cleaning and painting so you can both and your dad recover. Nicotine is horrible. I was left a house by an uncle and he and his girlfriend were chain smokers, and everything was yellowed!!! I paid an area painter to go in and paint every room including closets and a local cleaning lady to clean all cabinets and pantries inside and out. It was worth it because I was working full time then and we have a 500-acre farm that needs both of us at full attention. The primer and two coats of paint took care of it and the house smelled like a newly built home. It’s going to take you some time to get all of that junk out of your nose, throat and body but you need fresh air as much as possible. You all have our prayers and hope you can get everything done and in before you move anything into the new house.

    • If only paying people were an option.. I tried moving in with as little money spent as possible. 😛 I never realized that nicotine on the walls would cause any problems besides with the awful smell! You were lucky and smart to have people go in and paint over everything! It certainly is a lot of work and it’s not for the faint of heart. And trust me, as soon as we move in, all my attention is going towards the gardens, so I’ll have plenty of fresh air! 😉

  2. I moved into a townhouse years ago with similar, nicotine coated walls. What should have been white was a tarry yellowish-brown. Washed the walls a couple times with a strong vinegar and water solution. The place was less than ideal. Moved on not six months later. So gross.

congrats on your home though! Make it yours and keep us all posted!

    • Aww, yeah, the brownish walls are awful! Especially when you’re in a rented place and can’t paint them! I will do my best to keep everyone posted through this crazy moving time! 🙂 Have a great day!
