Tools For The Homestead

~

My fiancé and I went for a drive the other day before work to see some family and to pick up some tools for the property. Something about driving that morning felt so nice! The weather was still a bit fridged, so the windows stayed up in the jeep. But it was sunny, the spring blooms were all around us, and the leaves were starting to bud out!

One of my favorite things about driving around Michigan is the endless farm fields that you see! You could drive through them forever, and the view over them goes for miles! There’s just something beautiful about being able to see nothing for a few miles, not see a single house or town in sight, just a few trees and open space of possibilities for planting! (Although if I’m being real, nothing gets planted besides soybeans and corn, so saying ‘possibilities’ is a bit of a stretch..)

And of course, the woods are just as pretty! On a sunny day, the woods always look so inviting and magical on the old dirt roads. Every once in a while, you’ll spot the occasional house popping out through the woods at the end of a long dirt driveway. But for the most part, driving through the woods around here is peaceful and quiet. With no other trucks around, we felt quite alone and content driving to our destination on the back roads as we kept an eye out for deer and squirrels.

The old barns and farmhouses are another beautiful sight to behold while driving around! There were so many farmhouses with huge red barns, and I couldn’t help but picture what the lives are of the people who lived there were like… Did they grow up there? Do they have farm kids who milk the cows before school and who drive a tractor? Are they a new owner who just bought a farmhouse and decided to live in the country and start their lives together like we did? I love driving past houses and picturing the lives of the people who live there, it’s a fun game to pass the time.

Anyways! When we finally reached our destination, we got out of the car and got to work! We had gone to visit my grandmother to pick up a shovel or two for planting stuff this week, but goodness, we got a lot more than a shovel! My grandmother has a BUNCH of tools she no longer uses that have been passed down through generations. So when we asked for a shovel, she insisted that we take more than what we needed, because ‘we will need it all soon enough on our new homestead‘. ❤

With the tools loaded safely in the back of the jeep, we set out on our way home to put them in the garage before I went to work.

We love driving around and seeing all of the back roads and farm fields around Michigan (and there is a LOT to see of that). We were truly thankful for the tools we had received, and it not only saved us from having to buy any, but we got a piece of family history to go with it! 🙂

Well, that’s it for today! As always, my lovely readers; smile, have an amazing day, and enjoy a leisurely drive this week!
