What We’re Growing This Year

~

This week was planting week! The frost is finally over (knock on wood) and it was time to get the berry bushes in the ground!

With the weather finally warming up (it’s been high of 70’s and low of 40’s), the planting and digging through the dirt could begin! We haven’t gotten much planted besides the berry bushes at the moment, but it’s still the start to our homestead that we have been dying to make since we bought this place!

I have been buying plants left and right the past few months, and we have been saving them until just the ‘right time’ to finally plant them in the ground and start our ‘natural fence line’ around our property!

This week, we started with planting all of our blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry bushes on one side of the property.

After making sure they were in a straight line, we started digging the holes and getting them in the ground. I was honestly worried about a few of them that looked kinda dead, but some of them were still dormant, and I was pleasantly surprised to see green starts around the roots for the ones that were. 🙂

We had so many different varieties that we wanted to plant, so I made sure to make a detailed list of what got planted where, and then I marked each one with a yellow flag so that I knew where it was planted.

We have a bunch of rose bushes that we plan to plant on the front part of the property, but we have some trimming of some trees to take care of before we can put them in the ground. This will hopefully be added to the list of next week’s projects!

We also have a LOT of flowering bushes we intend on putting on the back half of the property, and maybe a few here and there around the sides. We still want to talk to our neighbors who live behind us before we plant these across the back half of our property, as their house is RIGHT where we are planting them. We had already discussed this with them about planting flowering bushes there, to make sure that they weren’t allergic to anything and make sure that the flower smell wasn’t going to bother them. They were completely okay with it, and almost excited as their kids would get to see new bushes popping up with pretty smelling flowers. We are hoping to have these in soon, but we have so many other projects going on at the moment that these may have to wait another week.

This year, as you can see, most of what we are planting are perennials. We have a few Dwarf fruit trees we want to plant as well, but we are still trying to save the money to get those. In the meantime, we wanted to focus on planting things that will take the longest to grow. After all, it’s said that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today! With all of the craziness of the wedding, buying a house, and my brother moving in with us, we didn’t want to put ‘too many’ projects under our belts. However, we DID want to start with something that would take a few years to grow! So here we are, planting the seeds of tomorrow in our own front yard. 🌳🪴🌹
