Nothing gets the house cleaned faster than a tornado watch or visiting family.. And that’s exactly what hubby and I came home to after our date day yesterday!
Around six a clock last night, our new weather radio (something we had gotten after the last tornado caught us off guard) started going off. I checked the radio with curiosity and seen a flashing ‘TORNADO WARNING‘ on the screen.
So, I opened my trusty weather radar on my laptop and looked at the radar for our area. There was a huge chunk of rain heading towards us, and the ‘conditions were right’ for a tornado.
Guys… The speed to which I did everything last night still amazes me..
Within two hours I had;
~Filled all of the buckets with water (in case power/water went out),
~Washed all of the dishes,
~Finished and folded laundry,
~Put the chickens in for the night,
~Tied up the chicken pen to our weights,
~Put all of the furniture up against the house or in the garage,
~Called all of my family and friends in the area to give them the weather report,
~Cleaned up the house,
~Gathered all of the flashlights and candles,
~And charged all of our devices.
I felt ready! I felt like we were going to breeze through this storm with ease (no pun intended). And as we all know, if you’re prepared, nothing happens. If you don’t prepare, that’s when something happens.
The sky lit up like a strobe lights, there wasn’t even a second in between each lightning strike! Thunder soon followed, quietly trying to lull us to sleep at first, and then shaking the house after. The rain came and pounded against our windows, and I was glued to my laptop, watching the weather radar as the storm came closer..

Suddenly, my radar went off again! I jumped out of bed, running over to see if the tornado watch had turned into a warning. I breathed a sigh of relief and laughed when I read the ‘SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING‘ on the screen. ‘Well, no duh!‘ I thought to myself, as I looked out the window at the storm raging outside.
Suddenly, the thunder got louder, the rain came down heavier, and the lightning was brighter than ever. The wind started to pick up speed, and the only thing I could think of was the chickens out in their coup…

By eleven, we were only through half of the first wave of storms, and that first wave was tiny compared to what was coming…
And then it happened! The alarm went off again, and this time the alarm flashed ‘TORNADO WARNING‘. We braced ourselves for what was to come, we listened to the weather radio, and we scoured the internet for anyone saying anything about tornado sightings.
Most of the tornado sightings were south of us. One sighted in the town my brother worked in, and another was spotted just south of my workplace. We sat and waited, until finally, we got the all clear around a quarter after midnight.
Still raining outside, hubby walked around the house to see where all the flooding was, and oh boy, we didn’t like that answer! Everything was under at least two inches of water outside! We had a river going through our garage and the house. Hubby was worried about water getting into the house, and I was worried about the chickens in their coup, as they were only about two inches off the ground!

When the tornado warning stopped at around 12:30, another one appeared for further south of us, and the worst was over. We finally went to sleep around one in the morning.

At 6:30 this morning, we did the usual ‘are you okay’ calls to our families and walked around the property to see if there was any damage. The flood waters had drained into the soil, there were no limbs down, and family was alright.
Once again, we were lucky enough to evade the tornadoes! And with no damage! We were also amazed that our power hadn’t went out, and that our town was once again untouched by the storms. ❤
Feeling tired, but too wired to go back to bed, I made myself some breakfast and a cup of tea and sat down at the computer to finish this blog post.
We are safe, we are good, and the property is untouched by the storm.
With that said, I think I’m going to take a nice long nap before I have to go into work tonight! So as always my lovely readers, smile, have an amazing day, and watch out for storms!
