Homestead Update: Making Our Beds and Swinging from Trees

~

A LOT has happened in the past few weeks, and I haven’t had time to tell you guys everything!

With all of the wedding planning and reception stuff going on this past week, we have had our hands full! On top of that, we have been getting things in the ground, as well as preparing things for next year’s gardens, taking care of the property, keeping the house cleaned and working full time! 😛

It’s been rough month here, but we’re making progress!

First, we finally got our lawn mowed, curtesy of my parents letting us borrow their lawn mower. The grass has been getting really tall here, and between the rainy days and work, nothing had gotten done with the grass, until now..

Of course, eventually we plan to have no grass up front at all, just rows of raised garden beds. But for now, we will have to mow.

We also added a new addition to our homestead.. An axe throwing board! This was left over from our reception. My father built it, my brother painted it, and the boys brought it home after the party and set it up in the side yard. Because of course, our homestead would not be complete without an axe throwing board! 🎯

The raised flower beds are also now up and being filled with leaves and grass from the yard. With the grass being so high, we had plenty of grass to rake up and throw into these beds, as well as into the compost. The leaves that hadn’t been raked up through the winter also made a great addition to the garden beds!

These raised beds won’t be planted in until next year, and we are planning to add a LOT more beds as wood comes to us. We are constantly being gifted free wood for projects, and we are slowly adding to the property little by little.

I am constantly being reminded to slow down by my grandmother, and to not get upset with ‘how little I’m getting done’ on the property. She often reminds me that we’ve only been in this house for three months and we have gotten a LOT done in a short time! It’s still hard to believe we’ve only been here for that short of time! This house felt like home the second we moved in, and it feels like we’ve lived here for years instead of months..

Another thing we’ve been working on is a way to wash our clothes! We’ve have a washer and dryer, and they work well enough. HOWEVER, the water line from our washer was filled with roots and the water kept backing up into the house, flooding the laundry room every time we ran the washer! After paying someone to de-root our pipes, my fiancé had to put in NEW pipe in from the washer to the sceptic tank out back. The washer is working perfectly now! ❤

Eventually we want to add a clothesline as well, so that we can dry our clothes on warm and sunny days. But that’s a project for another day..

And finally, my fiancé surprised me the other day by hanging up a swing in the backyard! I came home from work to find it strung up, and he was so proud and eager to show me this new addition! I have two more swings that I want to hang from one of the trees out back, but we have to get more rope first.

When my brother and I were little, my grandmother used to have a tree full of swings (the swing tree), and now that we are older, we hope to recreate that for ourselves and our future children. Plus, if we’re going to have a backyard full of trees, it seems like a waste not to hang at least one swing up!

There are lots of more projects we are working on, and even a few we have finished while writing this post. But I will talk more about those later.

For now, I will end this post right here, and go enjoy the sunshine seeping through the trees in the lounge chair out back. As always my lovely readers, smile, have an amazing day, and go enjoy the weather (whatever it may be)! 🌳☀️😎

  1. You have both done amazing with your home and garden during the short time you have been there.

Enjoy that swing and admire what you have both done.
